Grenada Carnival J’ouvert

Scroll Down

A lot of people start their Carnival marathon at the Dimanche Gras Show and go straight to the J’Ouvert festivities, where on Monday morning in the wee hours,

The customary Devil Mas or Jab-Jab bands emerge from the night’s darkness to parade through the town freely. Previously, these masqueraders wore little more than their horned helmets and were blackened with sour molasses, tar, grease, creosote, or mud. Their goal was to frighten bystanders with their hideous appearance and disgusting dances.

The customary Jab-Molassi of today has evolved into other colorful animals, such as Blue, Yellow, and Green Devils, who now participate in the early morning procession. These vibrant devils are far more lighthearted in nature; their only goal is to smear a little body paint on gullible onlookers as they move through the streets to the beats of steel bands, calypsos, and accompanying drums from massive DJ trucks.

Grenada’s J’Ouvert: Oil, Paint or Chocolate?

How to Prepare for Grenada’s J’Ouvert

Expert advice: Don’t dress for J’ouvert in anything you wouldn’t want to get dirty. This is a fairly wild event with a lot of paint and oil being flung around. To ensure that you arrive in J’ouvert on time, consider booking a room with us at Beachside Way in Lance Aux Epines, St. George’s!

To protect themselves from the inevitable smears of paint, chocolate, and oil that will cover their bodies as they dance and bump into each other in the enormous, jam-packed street party, seasoned partygoers begin by covering themselves with body oil or Vaseline. They then put on their oldest clothes or imaginative costumes and frequently add shower caps.

Attendance is not something to be terrified of. No one will bump you if you stand by the side of the road, but what fun is that? When you enter the scene wearing freshly laundered clothing, others will graciously offer to rub their colors onto your immaculate figure. All bets are off once you start, so you’ll have to burn or throw away your clothing.

Spicemas is more than simply a celebration; it is a transforming event that invites you to immerse yourself in the vibrant core of Grenada’s cultural heritage. Don’t miss out on this incredible event, where each moment is a chapter in a colorful story of tradition, creativity, and the infectious joy of Spicemas!
